Department Overview
 

Drug product supply is accountable for development and clinical trial manufacture of solid dose, oral drug products for the clinical supply chain organisation within Pfizer Research and Development. Processes vary from simple milling and blending operations through to complicated controlled release technology in the supply of the final drug product formulation i.e., tablets and capsules.

What can I achieve and what will I be accountable for whilst completing a placement at Pfizer?

As an Undergraduate you will be assisting with our research into a number of different projects under the umbrella of continuous improvement and process understanding. Implementation of your findings will help us develop the operational capacity of the solid dose manufacturing area.

Actual scope of work will be determined by requirements of department as dictated by the development portfolio in 2022/23 but is likely to include the following aspects: -

  • Evaluation of current equipment capabilities and improvement of in-house processes. Your conclusions will be utilised to guide future equipment purchases and training for the department.
  • Design of experiments and manufacturing of solid dosage forms utilising our state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment.
  • Characterisation of dosage forms manufactured, this may include product performance, processability and in vitro dosage form performance.
  • Physical characterisation of excipients, drug product intermediates and finished dosage forms through use of established analytical techniques and state of the art physical testing tools.
  • Updating best practice documents based on the output of the practical work conducted during the year.

When can I start?

Placements will start 5th September 2022 and will run for 12 months.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Type of person we are looking for, in relation to ‘Skills’, ‘Knowledge’ and ‘Motivation’:

  • A current student at a UK University completing a placement as part of a placement year or gap year
  • Keen, academic student with a knowledge of chemical engineering who is willing to learn quickly within the manufacturing arena to assist us with our equipment and process understanding.
  • An interest in solid dose manufacturing techniques.
  • Must be self-motivated.
  • Good communication and inter-personal skills will be required.
  • Accurate and timely documentation of work (including laboratory notebook entries, report writing and presentation as required).
  • Interact confidently with a broad spectrum of personnel within Pfizer Pharmaceutical Sciences.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of an expanded team.
  • Have a hands-on approach as they will be required to work alongside Manufacturing Technicians and Process Engineers.
  • Must be computer literate and be able to use standard computer software applications, i.e. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel to produce statistical data and written reports to clarify / justify their findings.
  • An ability to use internet search engines to gather data to assist with the assigned projects will also be advantageous.
